Prayer in Hand

How can I start a daily prayer routine?

Choose one moment you already have each day, give it a few quiet minutes, and pick a prayer you know. Start there before adding more.

This is our own optional practical suggestion, not an ecclesiastical obligation or an official rule of prayer. Adapt it to your circumstances and any guidance you receive from your parish or spiritual director.

An optional daily rhythm — choose one moment to begin
MomentSuggested timeSomething to try
Morning2 minutesPause before the day begins. Bring one intention to prayer.
Midday1 minuteSet aside your task briefly and say a familiar prayer.
Evening3 minutesLook back on the day. Give thanks, ask for help, and leave room for silence.

Make the first step easy to repeat

Connect your prayer time to something ordinary: sitting down with breakfast, finishing lunch, or putting your phone away for the night. Leave your prayer book or beads where you will use them.

Try that single moment for a week. If it feels manageable, add another. The times above are starting points, not targets to meet.

Where could the rosary fit?

If you want to include the rosary, choose a separate unhurried moment rather than squeezing it into the short pauses above. Our rosary days guide gives the weekly mystery schedule and links to the USCCB’s full instructions.

What if I miss a day?

Return at your next chosen moment. You do not need to double tomorrow’s routine to make up for this suggested plan. If the same time keeps proving difficult, move it or make it shorter.

A notebook can help you remember what you chose. Recording a streak is optional; it is not a measure of the value of your prayer.

Use what helps you begin

You can follow this routine with a book, beads, or no equipment at all. Prayer in Hand is awaiting App Store approval. Its free devotional library and optional paid scheduling tools are described on the product page.
