A field key and private specimen cabinet · Last updated July 29, 2026

The short version

Field-key analysis and cabinet storage stay on your device.

Cairnstone does not send us, or any server we operate, your personal data. There is no account, developer-operated analytics, advertising or third-party tracker. We do not sell or share your app content.

Apple-provided services and actions you deliberately take can involve limited data leaving the app. Those cases are identified below, including what leaves the app and who processes it.

What this app does

  • The shipping field key compares only the lustre, colour, visible structure, hardness and streak observations you select against rules bundled with the app. Those rules run on your device, make no network request and do not inspect photographs.
  • Cairnstone returns a shortlist of rock or mineral groups, not a mineral-species identification. It keeps uncertainty visible and names observations or laboratory methods that can separate common look-alikes.
  • Your cabinet — including optional photographs, notes, dates, group candidates and any coarse locality you enter — is stored in the app's on-device SwiftData store. Cairnstone does not enable CloudKit synchronization, and we operate no server that receives a copy of the cabinet.
  • Cairnstone does not request location permission. Locality is optional text you enter yourself, and specimen records do not store coordinates.
  • Camera permission is requested only if you choose to take a specimen photograph in the app. The system photo picker gives Cairnstone only the images you select, not broad access to your photo library.

Apple services and actions you choose

  • If you enable iCloud Backup for your device, iOS may include Cairnstone's local app data in an encrypted device backup. That operating-system backup is separate from CloudKit synchronization, which Cairnstone does not enable.
  • Cairnstone uses Apple's StoreKit to load products, complete purchases, check entitlement status and restore purchases. StoreKit receives no cabinet data; we do not receive your payment-card details.
  • If you share a specimen passport, iOS sends it only to the destination you choose. That destination's privacy and retention terms then apply.

What the app sends us

Nothing. We run no server that receives your content, we neither require nor offer an account, and we embed no analytics or advertising SDKs. We cannot see your app content because it is not sent to us. The app-specific notes above identify the limited cases in which an Apple service or a destination you choose processes data.

Purchases

Purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit. StoreKit uses network access to load products, complete purchases, check entitlement status and restore purchases. This transaction traffic is separate from your app content: the app does not add your journal, notes, photos, prayer activity, chart data or other in-app content to StoreKit requests. We never see your payment-card details.

You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device. That is entirely within your control and never requires contacting us.

Diagnostics

If your device is configured to share analytics with app developers, Apple may make crash and diagnostic information available to us through its developer tools. The app contains no analytics SDK and does not deliberately log or attach your app content to those reports. You control Apple's sharing setting under Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

Children

This app is not directed at children under 13 and sends us no personal data. If you believe a child has included personal information in an email to us, write to the address below and ask us to delete that correspondence.

Your rights

Laws including the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data held about you. We hold no personal data received from the app, so there is nothing from the app for us to produce or erase. If you contact us by email, you can ask us to provide or delete your support correspondence.

Use the app's deletion controls where available. Deleting the app removes its local data from that device, but may not remove copies in an Apple-operated private iCloud service or device backup, or files you previously exported or shared. Manage those copies in the relevant Apple service or destination. We have never sold personal information and never will.

Changes

If this app's behaviour ever changes in a way that affects this policy, this page is updated before that change ships, and the date above changes with it.
